During the late 70's and throughout the 80's (before we had the internet and mobile phones) CB Radio was one of the many ways people communicated with friends and family. CB stands for Citizen Band and this was a band of frequencies that were allocated by the government to the man in the street so he could have two-way conversations with other CB users (the same principal as a walkie talkie but more powerful).

Movies like Convoy, Smokie and the Bandit etc glamorised CB Radio and it caught on throughout the world. Unlike the mobile phone, once you purchase a CB Radio and an aerial, your good to go! No top up fees, no monthly bills etc. You could setup a CB Radio in your home and one in your car and be able to speak to each other for free and as long as you want. The distance you can speak to one another obviously depends on the quality of the equipment, however, the CB Radio equipment designed today is far more superior than that of the 80's. With today's equipment, you can easily get up to 30/40 kilometers.

CB Radio is now making a come back as people want to reduce their phone bills and not worry about the cost of long phone conversations and whether they have enough credit.

Young adults can also benefit by having a CB Radio in their car to communicate with their friends without having to worry about mobile phone costs.

Can I use a CB Radio in the car?

The Road Traffic Act 2006 is a bit grey when it comes to two-way communication since mobile phones are viewed differently by the police, however, it would be advisable not to use a CB Radio when driving as there is a €2000 euro fine or 6 months in prison should they decide to prosecute. If you do decide to use it when driving, please make sure you are not in a built up area and make sure that the mike lead is long enough that you can talk with both hands on the wheel. There are hands free CB mikes available on the market.

Do I need to have a licence?

No. The requirement for a licence was abolished in 1998.

I'm interested but I don't know what to buy?
