Ciaran's Well and the High Crosses are roughly 5 km from Crossakiel in the direction of Kells. St Ciaran (fl. C8 and perhaps biographer of St. Patrick) founded a monastery on the site. The Crosses were apparently markers for the boundary of the site. Nowadays there is a festival on the first Sunday in August to celebrate the curative power of the water from Ciaran's Well.Ciaran's Well

The waters are believed to be most efficacious on this day. Differnt areas of the well have different curative powers. Drinking the water is said to heal ailments of the throat. Lower down the stream, the water is said to cure problems with the feet and ankles. Elsewhere there is a stream for healing backs. The Festival has in the past attracted various sideshows and other events.
